How to blend essential oils

What is a blend anyway?

Essential oils can be combined to make more powerful blends in the same way. Essential oils are volatile, aromatic, oil soluble plant extracts that plants produce for therapeutic purposes and we can also use for therapeutic purposes. So when you collect these different single essential oils (extracts from one plant) that have similar qualities, you get a SYNERGISTIC effect producing a, “potion” that’s more powerful than the sum of it’s parts.

The Art (and Science) of Blending
So, how do you do a good blend? It could be as simple as just adding oils together that you intuitively think will work. You really can’t go wrong with mixing essential oils, so feel unrestrained in practicing. Rest assured you won’t create some harmful concoction or eliminate all therapeutic good.

Step 1) Start With a Need
Although essential oils smell nice and can be mixed to create a pleasing fragrance, you gain far more value targeting a therapeutic need. Like the example above, if you have a hard time resting, you can find oils that have that quality and simple add them together. And experiment.

Step 2) Select Your Single Oils
Do your research. You will want to select single oils that have the qualities that will meet or fulfill the need. To do this, you either need a really big brain with lots of useful information in it or a handy essential oil guide. Luckily, essential oil guides are easy to come by.

Step 3) Choose Type Of Application
Once you know what oils make up your blend, you need to determine how you will get it into your body. There are usually three application methods: aromatically (breathing it in), topically (applying it on the skin for absorption into the body or local area), and internally (eating, or rather, drinking it). There are also some non-direct uses of essential oils for purposes of utilities. Each of these application types has unique properties and variations.

Step 4) Put It Together
Once you know the desired results, the participating oils, and the type of blend you want to create, the rest is easy…

Just put it together in that chosen container.

You’re done. Simply enjoy.

TIPS:
Look for the “Blends Well With” listings in the essential oil guide
Look up Needs rather than Oils, for instance look at, “Sleep” rather than “Lavender”
Professionally created blends are best as they are
Label your blend and keep a record/journal
Generally use fewer oils and keep it simple
Order added doesn’t matter in personal blends
