How to Relieve Chronic Shoulder Pain

Join me for Aromahead Institute’s online class, Aromatherapy for Natural Living, where you’ll learn more ways to use essential oils in your daily life.

This video is an Aromatherapy recipe for relieving chronic shoulder pain with essential oils.

It’s a blend of essential oils in a base of Trauma Oil. Trauma Oil is amazing! It’s actually a carrier oil (in this case, olive oil) that’s been herbally infused with three different flowers—arnica, calendula, and St. John’s wort. Even without essential oils blended into it, Trauma Oil can ease pain. And when we add essential oils, we can take the pain relief to a whole new level!

You can actually use this essential oil blend for more than achy shoulders. It’s good for any joints that hurt you! Try it for elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, or even finger joints.

I’m using a cobalt blue glass bottle that holds 1 oz (30 ml).

The recipe is:

1 oz (30 ml) Trauma Oil (0:49)
5 drops Ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale) (1:31)
3 drops Black Pepper essential oil (Piper nigrum) (2:08)
2 drops Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) (3:42)
7 drops Spike Lavender essential oil (Lavandula latifolia) (4:15)
1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata) (5:04)

You probably noticed that the Black Pepper essential oil didn’t want to come out of the bottle immediately. Sometimes, a tiny air bubble forms and blocks the flow of the essential oil. When that happens, I like to pop the bubble by tapping the top of the orifice reducer gently with my finger. (3:11) I could just wait for the bubble to pop on its own . . . but then the essential oil can come pouring out of the bottle very fast, and I can lose track of how many drops I’m getting. So I prefer to pop the bubble. I just have to be aware that I have a bit of Black Pepper essential oil on my finger, and be sure to wash my hands before touching my face (especially my eyes).

We have five beautiful essential oils in this blend! They are all great for relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and bringing circulation to the area.

AND I have a surprise at the end of this video! (6:02) As I was making the blend, it occurred to me that it would be perfect for George, our camera man, who had hurt his elbow. I was so happy to be able to give this to him! He can apply it every few hours until his elbow feels better. (And you can apply it to any joints that hurt you in the same way!)
